COSMOGONIES | They can’t kill our spirit

Synopsis

Knowing what drives me and piques my curiosity, a friend – Flora – recommended Monique Wittig’s book Les Guérillères. An epic poem with an almost mythical force, its ever-open writing describes the daily life (and revolt) of a group of women, invoking their visions and determinations in deeply sensory and hallucinatory environments. Anchored in a firm will to overthrow an oppressive system to create a language (understood as a world) that speaks their tongue, “elles” (“they”), as Wittig names these women, are the protagonists of a revolutionary political and poetic project. A text that I read slowly, in a fragmentary way, which allowed me to imagine possible continuations, fill gaps, and, eventually, project myself into it.

Guided by principles of circularity, a figure traverses a dreamlike, ever-changing landscape. This could be a snippet of Wittig’s text, but is, above all, a kind of conversation – as if I were speaking with the author, speaking with all of them. And, in the pauses of this spectral exchange, beyond listening to them, states emerge, and the dance weaves the threads. Letting the lightness, the unknown, and the underground connect and blur to create an in-between space. Almost as if it were possible to extend an invitation to breathe together.
