Tânia Carvalho

Best known as a choreographer, with more than two decades of creative work behind her, Tânia Carvalho has established herself as an artist whose imagination is expressed in different languages: music, drawing and cinema.

In addition to her own productions, which have been presented in various theatres and festivals, both in Portugal and abroad, she has collaborated with companies such as the Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon, the Company of Elders (London), the Companhia Nacional de Bailado (portuguese National Ballet Company), the Paulo Ribeiro Company, the Ballet do Norte Company, Dançando com a Diferença, the Ballet National de Marseille, Tanzmainz, the ZfinMalta Dance Company, among others.

In the music field, her projects “Madmud”, “Idiolecto” and “duploc barulin” stand out. In 2018, she made her first film, “A bag and a stone – a dance piece for the screen”.

In 2021, she co-founded, with the musician and performer Matthieu Ehrlacher, the duo Papillons d’éternité, having then created and presented “Pieris Napi”, “Greta Oto”, “Lyropteryx Appollonia” and “Nymphalis Antiopa”.

She was awarded the Young Creators Prize 2000 for “Inicialmente Previsto” (1999) and twice awarded the Best Choreography Prize by the Portuguese Society of Authors for “Icosahedron” (2012) and “onironauta” (2021).

In 2018, a special cycle was dedicated to her in Lisbon, presenting several of her works. Later, as part of the Portugal-France 2022 Cross Season, the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris also dedicated a special programme to her, presenting different creations throughout the year.

In 2019, she was awarded the title of Citizen of Merit by the Municipality of Viana do Castelo. In 2023, she was awarded the insignia of Chevalier de L’ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture in recognition of her contribution to cultural enrichment.
